Influenza (well-known as “the flu”) is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. It’s a contagious disease that usually spreads through droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
At Advanced Urgent Care & Wellness we like to be thorough, checking for flu, strep and coronavirus. Because many of their symptoms can be similar, it’s difficult to precisely identify the culprit without the help of our urgent care’s comprehensive testing.
An Urgent Care’s Guide to the Flu
While the flu is typically mild, it can sometimes lead to serious complications, especially for young children, people with chronic health conditions and older adults. In rare cases the flu can even be fatal. Here’s more information on the different types of flu.
Types of Influenza
There are two main types of influenza virus that affect humans, A and B.
Influenza A Virus
This is the most common type of flu virus and the one responsible for pandemics. Influenza A virus can infect animals including birds, pigs and horses. These viruses can mutate easily, giving rise to new strains that can lead to widespread outbreaks.
Influenza B Virus
This type of flu virus is less common than influenza A, yet it can still cause significant illness. Influenza B virus mutates less frequently than influenza A, so outbreaks tend to be less severe.
Symptoms of the Flu
While flu symptoms and severity can vary from person to person, they typically include the following.
- Fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children)
In most cases, flu symptoms go away within a week or two. However, some people may experience complications such as ear infections, bronchitis or pneumonia.
Treating the Flu
The best way to prevent the flu is to get an annual flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is most effective when administered in the fall before flu season begins. Other preventive measures include:
- Washing your hands frequently with soap and water.
- Using herbal formulas and natural supplements.
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
- Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
- Cleaning frequently touched surfaces.
If you are experiencing flu symptoms it’s important to stay hydrated and rest, and consult your doctor if need be. We strongly recommend IV hydration fluids at our office for patients who are recovering from illness or suffering from dehydration.
Over-the-counter medications can help relieve flu symptoms such as fever, pain and congestion.
Seeking Medical Attention for the Flu
The following symptoms are signs that you should seek immediate medical attention.
- Having a fever of 103°F (39°C) or higher.
- Having difficulty breathing.
- Experiencing severe vomiting or diarrhea.
- Having a weakened immune system.
- Breastfeeding or being pregnant.
